March 2007 Vol 2 Issue 1 |
RF Central acquired Microwave Service Corporation, a microwave equipment sales, lease, and service company on January 31st, 2006. MSC will continue its operations from its Haverhill, MA facility. The purchase is an exciting juncture for RF Central, bringing decades of broadcast experience to our current team of seasoned veterans. The addition of MSC to RF Central's family of companies will expand and enhance our existing microwave design, repair, sales, and rental services. Both companies are excited about the union and the opportunities presented to better serve all of our customers.
January also brought a number of new additions to the RF Central team. Keith Blaisdell joined the company as Director of Engineering & Production. Keith was formerly News Director for WHTM TV abc27 in Harrisburg, PA. His prior experience includes work as a photojournalist and news operations manager. Keith is also an Emmy Award-winning member of NATAS and holds a B.A. in communications from Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, PA. Norman Stein also has joined our team as Vice President of Media & Government Programs and will be overseeing our federal, state, and local government business. Norman has come to RF Central with a unique blend of network, group, and government media experiences. Most recently, he was Director of Operations for Sinclair Broadcasting, and his prior experience includes working for the National Security Agency, Department of Defense, and over 14 years with CBS in the Washington Press Corps, during which he was awarded an Emmy for news coverage of the assassination attempt on President Reagan. Norman holds B.A. and M.G.A. degrees from the University of Maryland
WBRE and WYOU in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, PA have been using two of RF Central's Portable High Power Transmitters(RFX-PHT) since last fall. The PHTs are installed in Subaru Foresters and used to cover two critical areas that previously needed ENG trucks for coverage. 'The PHTs are easy to use, providing high quality video and bringing a whole new live element to our newscast', said Todd Tobin, Chief Engineer for the stations. The benefits of the PHT system are numerous, from providing access to areas that are inaccessible by trucks, to the simplicity of the system for the news team in the field. The PHT system provides overall betterment of live broadcasts.
The snowy cold of March's late-winter storm didn't stop the 246th Annual New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade. Total RF was there to provide broadcast production services for the Irish celebration. Once again, they counted on the reliability of RF Central's RF Extreme™ gear including two Camera Mount Transmitters(RFX-CMT) and two Portable Digital Transmitters(RFX-PDT).
RF Central's VP of Business Development, Dan Shine, delivered a technical presentation on complex COFDM techniques to Washington DC's SMPTE Section on March 15th. Total RF's Tour of California production techniques, encompassing 8 days and approximately 800 miles of coverage, was used as a practical example. Approximately 30 senior engineers from groups such as ABC, CNN, Gannett's WUSA-TV-9, Sprint-Nextel, and NAB Science & Technology were there, along with Tony Mattia and Norm Stein as additional RF Central representatives, and Bill Hurlock of Total RF fielding technical questions. The presentation generated so much interest that attendees lingered almost an hour afterwards to learn more about the products and services offered by the RF Central family of companies.
RF Central's new HD Camera Mount Transmitter (RFX-CMT-HD) stands out from the competition with its light weight, low delay, and extremely low power consumption. The latest NEL encoder technology and unmatched high-quality linear RF amplification technology from Gigawave give this unit superior performance capabilities. The RFX-CMT is available in multiple frequency bands, including 2 GHz, and offers HD abilities that will soon be available in all of RF Central's ENG transmitters and receivers.
